DAYTON FRANCIS SCHMALZRIED
son of Selma Uppendahl, daughter of Mary Anna Louise Strickert, daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm Strickert, son of Johann and Kristina Strickert

DIGHTON - Vigil service for Francis Schmalzried Jr., 68, will be 7 tonight at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Dighton. Funeral Mass will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. David Kraus as celebrant. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Schmalzried died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.

He was born Jan. 15, 1933, at Dighton, the son of Dayton Francis and Selma M. (Uppendahl) Schmalzried.

A lifetime resident of Lane County, he worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation as the maintenance supervisor. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church and Boy Scouts of America, was a third- and fourth-degree member of Knights of Columbus, belonged to the Lions Club and was a longtime member of the Lane County Emergency Medical Technicians Service. He enjoyed fishing, bowling and his family activities.

On Nov. 30, 1963, he married Emilie Linden at Dighton.

She survives. He is also survived by a son, John Schmalzried, Leavenworth; a daughter, Jacquelyn Olson, Dallas; three brothers, Edward Schmalzried, Dighton, Richard Schmalzried, Quinter, and Ronald Schmalzried, Topeka; a sister, Mary Wagner, Lincoln, Neb.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 6:30 tonight and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton.

Memorials are suggested to Boy Scout Troop No. 90 or the Lane County Ambulance Fund, both in care of the funeral home.
