DIGHTON -- Edward D. Schmalzried, 73, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007, at Lane County Long Term Care Unit in Dighton.

He was born July 31, 1934, in Scott City, to Dayton Francis and Selma Matilda Uppendahl Schmal¬­zried. He grew up in Dighton and graduated from Dighton High School in 1952.

Mr. Schmalzried served in the Air Division of the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1957.

After his discharge from the Navy, he worked for Sam Heath, who raised sheep, and then went to work for Glenn Mumma at his locker plant. In 1961, he began building Mumma Feed Yard which was completed in 1971.

While working there, he fed his own cattle, at a time owning 5,000 head.

In 1972, he began farming and remained involved in that as much as possible until shortly before his death.

He attended auctioneer school in 1982 and auctioneered with Leo Krug and had been a volunteer fireman for 32 years.

At the time of his death, he owned an antique and collectible store in Dighton.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Barney Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post No. 190, all at Dighton.

He enjoyed making things out of metal, such as windmills, weathervanes and yard ornaments.

On Aug. 5, 1961, he married Karen Ann Hair in Ness City. She died Feb. 2, 2004. He also was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Francis Schmalzried.

Survivors include a daughter, Julie Bearup of Denver; two sons, Jeff and Jay Schmalzried, both of Dighton; two brothers, Richard Schmalzried of Quinter, and Ronald Schmalzried of Topeka; a sister, Mary Wagner of Lincoln, Neb.; and four grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. David Randall officiating.

Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by Barney Masonic Lodge of Dighton.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Condolences may be sent at garnandfh@sbcglobal.net.
