- Logan Township Records
Compiled by Joe Gerrath of Perth County, Ontario, Canada
Resources: 1. County Marriage Registers of Ontario, Canada. 1858-1869. Volume 17. Perth County. I was able to find two marriages for Charles, and one each for John, Friederich and William. The problem with this book is that it represents a third transcription of the original church records. Thus a lot of mistakes in spelling undoubtedly occurred, possible multiple ones for the same record as it passed from the minister's register to the county clerk to the people who transcribed the County records for this book. Unfortunately there are no similar books for births and deaths during this period. 2. Census Records: I checked the 1861 Canadian Census for Logan Township, but could not find any Strickerts. Surviving records may be incomplete. Also checked the 1871 Census for Logan Twp. and found (all as surname Stricker) the families of John Sr., John Jr., William and Charles, but could not find Christian or Frederick.
3. Ontario Birth registration Index from 1869 to 1893
4. Ontario Marriage Index from 1869 to 1910.
5. Ontario Death Index from 1869 to 1916 I then looked up all of the records I found on the index microfilms.
Family of Johann Sr. and Christina Feuerhak:
- They are in the 1871 Census with surname Stricker. I have read their ages as 96 and 90, obviously 20 years too high. Their son Christian, not yet married, is living with them and his age is 37, also very wrong.
- Christina died in 1891 at the age of 90 in Logan Twp., Perth Co. [Reg. Number 012716-91 = serial no. + year]. She died 9 Sept. 1891 of old age. She is listed as the wife of Johann Strickert. The informant for the record is her son, Christian, who was living on a farm designated as Concession 11, Lot 18 according to the Ontario method of locations.
- In the second marriage record of Frederick, Christina’s surname is written “Fairbrock” [in the first, it is transcribed as “Tirehak”] and in the marriage transcription for William it is “Qeverhak”.
- Family of John Strickert & Louisa Wall:
- marriage record from Marriage Registers of Ontario, Vol. 17: Stricket [sic], John, 25, born in Prussia, living in Logan Twp., s/o J & Christina, married 4 Nov. 1861 to Louisa Wall, 20, born in Prussia, living in Logan Twp., d/o Friederich & Christina.
- 1871 Census for Logan Twp: John [surname Stricker] is listed as 31 and Louisa as 29. There are six children listed: William 9, Ada 8, John 6, Herman L. 4, Gustave 3 and Mary 7/12.
- death registration of John [as Strickart] - #017903-71, Perth Co., Logan Twp. John Strickart, farmer, b. Germany, died 9 Aug. 1871 at age 34 years, 9 months [no parents] Physician: Dr. Hornibrook; cause of death: inflammation of bowels - 10 days; informant: the Lutheran minister C.R. Gerndt; buried 12 Aug. [calculated birth date would be Dec. 1836]
- Children
- son William’s marriage registration - #009416-86 Perth Co., Mitchell William Strickert, 23, farmer, bachelor, born Logan Twp., living in Mitchell; s/o John & Louisa Strickert, married 13 Jan. 1886 to Henrietta Wood, 28, widow, born & living in Fullarton Twp.; d/o John & Margaret Stone. Minister: Mathew Swann. Marriage by License. Witnesses: Both groom and bride are listed as Methodists.
- There is one child registered, #031941-91, with name Mary Jane, b. 13 Mar. 1891 in Mitchell. Her name was corrected in June 1956 to Mary Ellen [I suppose she needed a birth certificate to apply for a pension, and discovered the mistake]. Father William is listed as a laborer in Mitchell.
- William’s wife’s death registration: Perth Co., Mitchell #026936-16 - Henrietta Stone Strickert, b. Ontario, died 12 Nov. 1916 in Mitchell, age 60 years, married, housewife; d/o John Stone & Margaret Rabb. Physician: A. Dalton Smith, M.D. Cause of death: cancer of uterus - 2 years. Informant: Wm. Strickert.
- son Louis’ marriage registration - #001600-89 Bruce Co., Mildmay [Louis is not in the 1871 Census, unless he is Herman L.] Louis Strickert, 26, mason, bachelor, born Logan Twp., living in Perth Co.; s/o John & Louisa Strickert, married 19 Mar. 1889 [Mildmay] to Maggie Riehl, 26, spinster, b. Ellice Twp, Perth Co.; d/o John & Catherine Riehl. Minister: G. Finkleimer. Marriage by license. Witnesses: Peter & Anna Pletsch, both of Mildmay. Bride & groom’s religion listed as Evangelical Association [the name used by German Lutherans in this area of Ontario].
- birth registration of Emily Mary Strickart [=Mary in 1871 Census]: #017516-70 Logan Twp.; born 25 July 1870; d/o John Strickart, farmer, & Louisa Wall.
- birth registration of Frederick Charles Strickart: #019617-72 Logan Twp.; born 24 Apr. 1872; s/o John Strickart Jr., farmer, & Louisa Wall [annotation: “a posthumous child, the father having died in 1871"].
- Louisa married again - Reg. No. 008742-76 Logan Twp. Paul Brown, 46, farmer, widower, born in Athol Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario; living in Logan Twp.; s/o Ira & Hulda Brown, married 5 Aug. 1876 in Logan Twp. to Louisa Strickart, 34, born Stettin, Germany, living in Logan Twp.; d./o Frederic [sic] & Sophia Wall [mother’s name differs from Louisa's first marriage record]. Minister: Rev. A.R. Schulz. Marriage by license. Religion: groom as Wesleyan Methodist, bride as Lutheran.
- 1881 Canadian Census for Logan Twp.: Family of Paul Brown, 50, labourer, b. Ont. and Louisa, 48 [seriously wrong!], b. Germany, contains Frederick Striker [sic], age 9; also Ellen Brown 4 and Maggie Brown 1. Emily Mary is not there, but can find no record of her death.
- Family of Charles [Carl] Strickert:
- Marriage record #1 in source No. 1: Charles Stickert [sic], age 26, born Weggwy [sic], Prussia, living in Logan Twp., s/o John & Christina; married 4 Mar. 1861 to Caroline Black, age 26, born Zohrnek, Prussia [can't find this place], living in Logan Twp., d/o Theophilus & Justina
- Marriage record #2 in source No. 1: Charles Strickert, widower, age 31, born Wegum in Prussia, living in Logan Twp., s/o Johan & Christiana (Sebastian -obviously wrong surname); married 22 Oct. 1865 to Christine [probably a misread of Gustine] Kriese, widow, age 25, born Borrowte in Prussia, living in Logan Twp., d/o John Schurbart [really Scherbarth] & Ann Markward [probably Marquardt].
- Gustine/a or Justine/a’s baptismal name is probably Augusta or Augustina. In various records her surname varies: Schurbart, Scherbert, Scherbarth. Regarding her birthplace, she had a brother Charles who was said to be born in Boronko, Prussia in his marriage record (it is a real place, now in Hungary, I think).
- Gustina’s first husband was Johann (John) Kriese, dates about 1837-1864. They had a daughter, Emilia Elizabeth Kriese, born 22 Sept. 1863 in Mitchell, Perth Co., Ontario; married 15 Jan. 1884 in Logan Twp. to Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Wilken; died 22 Feb. 1948 in Spokane, Washington. [this info from Google searching] -you mention a marriage to a “Gustave Gruese”; I think this must be a misreading of her first married name, Gustina Kriese.
- The 1871 Census has Charles as age 37, his wife as age 31, and children, Anne 5, Daniel 2 and Maria 1. [don't know where Emilia Elizabeth is; she would be age 7at the time of the Census; perhaps she is with a Kriese family]
- Children registered 1869 and later are: [+ Reg. Nos.; all born in Perth Co., Logan Twp]
- Mary [probably the Maria in the Census] - b. 26 Dec. 1869 #009287-69
- Augustina Charlotte - b. 30 Oct. 1871 #010646-71
- Charles Frederick William - b. 22 Feb. 1873 #017606-73
- August (twin) - b. 16 May1876 #023035-76
- Henry (twin) - b. 16 May 1876 #023036-76
- Frederick William - b. 28 Oct. 1880 #026672-80
- I have a death registration of a Daniel William Strickart who is probably the Daniel in the Census for this family. He was born in Logan Twp. and died 14 Nov. 1870 at age 1 year and 10 months, of diphtheria; buried 18 Nov. Reg. No. 006625-70 Perth Co., Logan Twp. Unfortunately no parents are given and the informant for the record is the Lutheran minister, Rev. C.R. Gerndt, not the father of the child.
- Another death registration may be the Mary in Charles’ family [again no parents are given]. She is listed as Mary Augusta Paulina Strickart, born in Logan Twp., died 24 Nov. 1870 at age 11 months, also from diphtheria; buried 30 Nov. Reg. No. 006629-70 Perth Co., Ontario. Same informant as for Daniel.
Friederich (Frederick) Strickert families:
- marriage #1 from Perth Co. Marriage Registers, Vol. 17: Strickert, Friederich, 24, b. Wegien in Prussia, living in Logan Twp.; s/o John & Christiana [sic] (Tirehak), married 29 Sept. 1862 to Wilhelmina Germann, 23, born Haimbeck [Hardenbeck], Prussia, living in Logan Twp.; d/o Friederich & ? (Sandhoff). Wilhelmina’s surname is Giermann, but it is most often anglicized to German or Germann.
- son Hermann, b. Abt. 1863-4 (IGI says born in Chicago 7 Feb. 1864), found in marriage registration: #009491-91 Logan Twp. Hermann Strickert, 27, bachelor, farmer, b. & living in Logan Twp.; s/o Frederick Strickert & Wilhelmine née Germann, married 5 May 1891 in First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tp. Of Logan (by Rev. Wm. Weinbach; by banns), to Anna Pehlke, 16, spinster, b. Germany, living in Tp. of Logan; d/o Michael Pehlke & Marie née Hellwig. Witnesses: Johann Strickert & Caroline Roch, both of Logan Twp.
- daughter of Hermann and Anna: Sophia Ann Louisa, b. 5 Aug. 1892 in Logan #025332-92
- son: George Carl, b. 29 Sept. 1894 in Logan #025249-74. In both birth records Hermann is listed as living on Con. 15, Lot 25 Logan Twp. and Anna's surname is Pilke.
- The IGI says Anna Pehlke was born in "Strausberg, Germany" [maybe Strasbourg?] and has the wrong date for her marriage to Hermann. Four children born in Kansas are mentioned.
- daughter Annie, b. Abt. 1869, found in marriage registration: #009068-89 Logan Twp. [was she also born in Chicago?] John Wilkins, 28, bachelor, farmer, b. Logan Twp., living in State of Kansas, U.S.; s/o Frederick & Sophia Wilkins, married 15 Jan. 1889 {in Logan) to Annie Strickart, 19, spinster, b. & living in Logan Twp.; d/o Frederick & Wilhelmina Strickart. Minister: Rev. Landsky, Lutheran, Logan. Marriage by license. Witnesses: Charles Mogk & Wilhelmina Strickart, both of Logan Twp.
- daughter Wilhelmina Augustina Strickart, birth registration #017505-70 Logan Twp. [Frederick must have come back from Chicago] born 2 June 1870 in Logan, d/o Frederick Strickart & Wilhelmina German [sic]; she died [as Wilhelmine Strickert, 24 Sept. 1889 (Logan Twp.) at age 19; cause: inflammation of bowels - one week; Physician: Dr. Smith, Mitchell.
- son Frederick William Strickart, birth registration #019618-72 Logan Twp. born 4 May 1872 in Logan, s/o Frederick Strickart, farmer, & Wilhelmine Giermann; he died at age 8 months, 18 Jan. 1873, registered twice with different surnames: #006319-73 as Strickart and #036319 as Strickat. Cause of death: cramps - 28 days. No physician.
- wife’s death registration #028264-72 Logan Twp. [has her full set of given names] Wilhelmina Augusta Frederica Strickart, born in Hardenbeck, Prussia Germany; died 13 May 1872, age 27 years, farmer’s wife [no parents given]. Cause of death: inflammation after childbirth - 10 days; Informant: C.R. Gerndt [he is the Lutheran minister in Logan Twp.]
- marriage #2 - registration no. 010197-73 Perth Co., LoganTwp. Frederick Strickart, 34, widower, farmer, born in Wegun, Prussia; living in Logan Twp.; s/o John & Christian [sic] Strickart, married 23 Feb. 1873 in Lutheran parsonage, Logan Twp. to Anna Walter, 29, born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, living in Logan Twp.; d/o Christoph & Elizabeth Walter. Minister: F. [looks like Brezing?]. Marriage by banns. Witnesses: Christian Strickart, Logan & William Hoppenrath, Logan [you mentioned a Hoppenrath relative in you last email]. I can find no death record for Anna, but it seems very odd that [presumably the same] Frederick marries again a few months later.
- marriage #3 - registration no. 009986-73 Perth Co., Mitchell Frederick Strickert, 32, widower, farmer, born in Brandenburg, Prussia, living in Logan Twp.; s/o John Strickert & Christina Fairbrock [sic], married 27 Oct. 1873 in Mitchell to Catherine Newman, 18, spinster, born & living in Logan Twp.; d/o Frederick Newman & Louisa Vent. Minister: Rev. Samuel Wilson. Marriage by license. Catherine’s surname is actually Neumann, but it is anglicized to Newman or Newmann in some records.
- Children of Frederick and Catherine
- there are no children registered for this couple until 1880. Did they leave Ontario for several years and then return?
- I did not find any Mary Anna who you say was born in 1878 [there is a Mary born in 1878 but she is Christian’s daughter].
