DIGHTON -- Selma M. Schmalzried, 88, died Aug. 4, 1999, at Lane County Long Term Care Unit, Dighton.

She was born Dec. 6, 1910, at Amy, the daughter of Henry F. and Mary A. Strickert Uppendahl. She graduated from Dighton High School and attended Fort Hays State University. A lifetime Lane County resident, she taught in rural schools for three years and then served as Lane County treasurer for 14 years.

She belonged to Twilight Rebekah Lodge No. 663, the Lane County Historical Society, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Lane County Hospital Auxiliary, the Wilson EHU and the J.O.Y. Center, all at Dighton.

On Aug. 28, 1931, she married Dayton F. Schmalzried at Kinsley. He died May 8, 1984. 

Survivors include: four sons, Francis and Edward, both of Dighton, Richard, Quinter, and Ronald, Topeka; a daughter, Mary Wagner, Lincoln, Neb.; a brother, Henry Uppendahl, Pueblo, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Tod Anthony presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton, and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Lane County Historical Society or the Lane County Ambulance Fund, both in care of the funeral home.
