Walter Frederick Strickert
[son of Henry J. Strickert, son of Friedrich Wilhelm Strickert, son of Johann and Christina Strickert}

Walter Strickert was born June 8, 1916, in Scott City, Kansas, at the home of his paternal grandmother. He was the oldest of seven children born to the Rev. and Mrs. Henry J. Strickert. Walter was baptized by his father on June 18, 1916. Three of Walter’s brothers became Lutheran ministers and his only sister married a Lutheran pastor. His two other brothers have also been very active in the service of their church.

Pastor Strickert received his elementary education in a public school in Lincoln County, KS, and then at Immanuel Lutheran School near Jackson, MO, following his father’s Call there. He was confirmed at Immanuel on April 13, 1930.

From 1930 to 1936, he attended St. Paul’s Lutheran High School and Junior College in Concordia, MO, and in the fall of 1936, he enrolled at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO.  During his third and fourth years of seminary (1938-1940), he vicared two years at First Lutheran Church, Knoxville, TN, where he met his future wife, Mary Boyd.

Seminary placements were few, so the year following his graduation from Concordia Seminary, he received a temporary Call and served as assistant to the late Rev. Adolph Behnke at Bethany Lutheran Church, Natural Bridge and Clay in St. Louis. Upon receiving a Call, Pastor Strickert was ordained on May 17, 1942, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, El Dorado, AR. He served as pastor of that congregation until 1945 when he received a Call to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Chillicothe, MO. He was installed there on February 25, 1945. While serving the Chillicothe congregation, he also was the pastor for Peace Lutheran Church, Brookfield, MO and Immanuel Lutheran Church, Trenton, MO.

On October 3, 1948, he was installed as pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Sedalia, MO. He served that congregation for almost twenty years. Among the joys of his ministry were: the opening of their Christian Day School and starting a daughter congregation by the releasing of 150 baptized (100 communicants) members to form the nucleus of a new congregation, Our Savior Lutheran Church, Sedalia, MO. Pastor Strickert also served the District and the Circuit in various capacities during his pastorate in Sedalia.

On June 2, 1968, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Olivette, MO, Pastor Strickert was commissioned as Missionary-at-Large by the Missouri District Mission Board Director, Dr. Paul Ph. Spitz. He was to establish a new congregation in the Creve Coeur-Chesterfield area, which became King of Kings Lutheran Church. The Lord blessed his pastoral leadership and King of Kings grew to 772 baptized members (584 communicants) during his eighteen years.

Pastor Strickert retired from the full-time pastoral ministry on June 29, 1986, but only slowed down a bit. He continued to serve the LCMS-Missouri District in various capacities as a Circuit Counselor, then as First Vice President and Third Vice President. For several years he served as Visitation Pastor at Grace Lutheran Chapel, Bellefontaine Neighbors, MO.

Pastor Strickert married Mary Boyd of Knoxville, TN on April 7, 1942. They had five children: Rick (Jane) and two daughters, Austin, Texas; Fred (Gloria) and three children, Waverly, IA; Dorothea (Ralph Dehne, deceased) and three children, Pasadena Hills, MO; Tammy (Kevin Humphreys) and two children, Virginia Beach, VA; and David (Claudia) and three daughters, Charlotte, NC. Pastor has three great-grandchildren and one more on the way! Also surviving him are three brothers: Arnold (Fritzie) Strickert, Jackson, MO; Roland (Waneta) Strickert, Nashville, TN; and Rev. Robert (Eunice) Strickert, Atlanta, GA, one sister, Betty (Mrs. Walter) Ruehrdanz, Mt. Prospect, IL, and one sister-in-law, Helen Strickert, Dearborn, MI. Mary died in 1988. In 1992, Walter married Ruth Riedel. She died in 2004. Also preceding him in death are his two brothers, Rev. Arthur Strickert and Rev. Paul Strickert.

Walter F. Strickert suffered and stroke on July 18 and died at Christian Northeast Hospital in St. Louis on July 20, 2006.  He was buried at Redeemer Lutheran Cemetery, Affton, Missouri with a memorial service at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Chesterfield, Missouri on July 24.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to: “The Strickert Student Aid Endowment Fund” Concordia Seminary, 801 Seminary Place, St. Louis, MO 63105.
