Observations (Dec. 18, 2006)
1. The Strickert name does not occur in Weggun Baptism records from 1670 to 1786.  The Strickert name first occurs as a witness in 1787.  The first Strickert baptism occurs in 1794.

2. When Johann Strickert applied to emigrate in 1856, he listed his profession as Arbeitsmann (a general workman).  For most of these baptism records the Strickert men are listed as Tagelohner (day laborers).  Beginning in the 1840s the term Arbeitsmann comes into use.  Also in the 1840s, there are five references to Johann Strickert as Bauer, perhaps implying that he now owned his own farm.

3. There are a limited number of names that are recycled through several generations: Johann and Carl for men and Dorothea and Christine for women.  Others seem to be popular because of the ruling Prussian family: Friedrich and Friedrike; Wilhelm and Wilhelmine.  A few occur less often: Sophie, Christoph, Karoline, Ernestine.

4. It appears to be common when a child dies, that the same name is given to a younger brother or sister.  Thus Christine Dorothea Strickert Schulz had three sons named Carl Friedrich born respectively in 1836, 1838, and 1840.  See "Strickert Family Tree" page for grouping of names under families.

5. The first name in the baptismal record is not necessarily the commonly used name.  For example, my Great-Grandfather Friedrich Wilhelm Strickert (born Feb. 8, 1839) is listed as Wilhelm Friedrich.  This can be confusing because he has a younger brother also named Wilhelm Friedrich (born Sept. 13, 1841).  Carl Strickert and Christine Wichmann had seven children:  all five girls are listed with the first name "Christine" and the two boys with the first names "Johann."

6.  In the first generations, the number of male Strickert children are minimal.  Carl Strickert is the only male with three sisters.  Johann has five sisters, but his only brother Johann Carl Christoph died by age 10.  Thus it is fairly easy to trace the Strickert name through the first generations.

7.  Since the Strickert name first appears in Weggun in 1787, it is assumed that the family migrated there shortly prior to that date.  Because the family tradition cites family origins in Mecklenburg only several miles to the northwest, it is reasonable to accept the idea of movement from west to east.  In the late 1700s, three hundred thousand Mecklenburgians migrated to Prussia, many of them former serfs.

8. The early listings of baptismal witnesses provide the names as only Tagelohner Strickert or Frau Strickert.  So the assumption is that a single couple and their children had moved to Weggun. Only when their children reach young adulthood, are first names given.

9. The "Frau Strickert" listed as a baptism witness in 1789, 1793, 1794, and 1804 may be named "Dorothea."  The prevalence of the name Dorothea within the family suggests a matriarch with that name.  In 1797, there is a baptismal witness named "Dorothea Strickert" which may be the same.  Also the database  project for Brandenburg genealogy  http://www.db-brandenburg.de/index.php?sprache=1 lists the death of a Dorothea Elisabeth Strickert (born Behm) in Weggun in 1810.  A preliminary conclusion is that this is the same person.  Likely she was born between 1740-1755.

10. "Tagelohner Strickert" is listed as baptism witness in Weggun in 1789 and 1791, also as "Strickert" in 1787, most certainly the husband of "Frau Strickert" of baptism records identified above as Dorothea Elisabeth Strickert.  According to the database project for Brandenburg genealogy http://www.db-brandenburg.de/index.php?sprache=1 lists  Weggun's first Strickert death was that of Christoph Strickert in 1796--the only death listing consistent with this patriarch of the Weggun Strickert family.  It is notable that the first male child baptized in Weggun was Johann Carl Christoph Strickert in 1804.

11. On the basis of this information (and until contrary data becomes evident), we would conclude that the first Strickert couple arriving in Weggun in the early 1780s (the grandparents of Johann Strickert) were Christoph Strickert (born about 1740) and Dorothea Elisabeth Behm Strickert (born about 1750).  The former died in 1796 and the latter in 1810.

12. The database project for Brandenburg genealogy http://www.db-brandenburg.de/index.php?sprache=1 lists two marriages in Weggun consistent as children of this couple.  The first of these, Carl Strickert (baptized prior to arrival in Weggun, perhaps about 1776), married Christine Sophie Wichmann in 1797.  Seven children are listed for this coupld in the baptism record from 1799 to 1815.  Carl Strickert is listed in the Brandenburg database as dying in 1838 and Christine Sophie Wichmann in 1858, both in Weggun.

13. The second of these is Dorothea Strickert (also baptized prior to arrival in Weggun, perhaps about 1780) married Carl Maas in 1798.  They are listed in the baptism record with a son Carl in 1799.  However no other children are listed in the baptism record and there is no data about their deaths.  Presumably they moved away.

14. Apparently a third child of Christoph and Dorothea was Fredericke Strickert who is listed in the baptism record in 1794 as having a daughter while unmarried.  She is not listed again either as married or having further children, perhaps having moved away.

15. One family data base reports another daughter of this first couple as Sophie Marie Strickert (born ca. 1783).  However, her name does not appear in Weggun records.

16. Among the seven childen of Carl and Christine Sophie Wichmann Strickert, three died as children, and three daughters married and stayed in Weggun, all having children listed in the baptism record:
     Dorothea Strickert married Johann Schulz and had 10 children;
     Wilhelmine Strickert married Johann Gudenschwager in 1827 and had 7 children;
     Christine Strickert married Carl Nehls in 1834 and had 7 children.

17. Johann Friedrich Strickert, the only surviving son to reach adulthood, was the fourth child of Carl and Christine Sophie Wichmann Strickert.  There are two discrepanies from family tradition.  First family tradition and his Scott City, Kansas burial record list his death as 1801, while the Weggun baptism record clearly lists his birth in 1806.  Likewise his birthdate is clearly listed as Nov. 1 (with baptism date as Nov. 15), while family tradition lists a January 11th birthdate.  [This misunderstanding may have resulted from writing the date of birth as 1-11-1806 where the day is given first and the month second, and the later custom of reading the month first and the day second.]

18.  The baptism records note that Johann Strickert and Christine Feuerhak, who married in 1829, had the five sons who later emigrated with them and the one daughter who married in Weggun.  Also listed is a firstborn son, Johann Carl Strickert, born May 24, 1830, who died June 30, 1831.

19.  Other birthdate info for several of Johann's children differs from family tradition data:
     Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Strickert was born May 22, 1834, not March 22, 1834.
     Johann Christian Friedrich Strickert was born Nov. 15, 1836, not Nov. 13, 1836.
     Wilhelm Friedrich Strickert was born Sept. 13, 1841, not August 18, 1841.

20.  Marriages, Confirmations, and deaths from Weggun Church records following 1850 is listed on another page.
