Winifred Roeper, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1950 went to Zimbabwe as a missionary nurse (See the book Ordinary people in God’s Hands by Diane Powell Hawkins), at the same time that Martin Uppendahl arrived from Kansas.  Shortly thereafter they married and served there until 1960.  There they had four children: Maryjean (born 1952), Daniel H. (born 1953), Timothy Gale (born 1956), and another son.  Timothy died in Africa at the age of two.  Upon returning to the United States, Martin pastored a number of congregations including one in Anchorage, Alaska.  In 1998, they retired to the GoYe Village in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
